Some gigs have all of the fun. Along with designing the Kennedy era look for the award winning cable series Mad Men, costume designer Janie Bryant co-designed a 65 piece collection inspired by the show for Gap Inc.‘s Banana Republic stores.
Bryant appeared at an Aug 11 launch party for Banana Republic’s Mad Men at The Grove retail center in Los Angeles.
Bryant had been working with the Banana Republic design staff for about a year to get the balance right for the collection’s modern take on Mad Men’s early-1960s look.
“It’s all about incorporating the costume design of the show,” Bryant said. “Consumers will be able to get that Mad Men look. At the same time, it's not wearing a costume. They can wear it with jeans and high heels. But you still get that Mad Men look.”
Banana Republic’s Mad Men collection ranges from tie-bars to leopard skin pumps, skirts and skinny lapeled suits. Fabrics and fits will be modern, but the prints and silhouettes will have that panache of show characters Don Draper and Peggy Olson.
Along with the 12-hour-a-day shifts at Mad Men and publishing styling book The Fashion File in December, Janie had a soft launch for her website in July and is thinking about starting her own brand.
Unfortunately Janie was tight lipped on the future of the Mad Men’s 1960s style. Do Don and Peggy every go hippie? Will Don, gasp, wear a wide-lapelled suit? “I can’t tell you. I know nothing!” she said.
