Elizabeth McGovern looks lovely, but not so comfy.
Downton Abbey returns in a few weeks for its sophomore season. The Golden Globe-nominated British TV series follows the lives of a turn-of-the-20th-century British aristocratic family and the huge staff needed to manage the house (and the family members)—and while the story lines are inherently addictive, the costumes are period-accurate and fantastic.
One thing the costumes are not, however, is comfortable, apparently.
In recent Q&A in New York with the cast and creators of the show, Elizabeth McGovern, who plays the Countess of Grantham in the show, had this to say about them: “The costumes do so much of the work for you because they inform the way you move; the way you sit. And on top of that they’re a key element to the beauty of the show. Having said that, they’re not comfortable.”
Bloggers Tom and Lorenzo were there (so envious…) and have a very fun, spoiler-free recap of the event on their site.
Season 2 bows in the U.S. on PBS beginning Jan. 8. If you missed season 1, PBS will be airing it again starting Monday.
Here are some photos from season 2--and a few behind-the-scene shots. Can you spot the guy in the parka? And hey, Maggie Smith, is that a camera in the parlour? Enjoy!
