Santa Monica Place is looking for a few good mannequins. Well, actually 100 mannequins for a community art project that will celebrate the re-opening of the upscale Santa Monica shopping center and raise scholarship funds for Otis College of Art and Design.
The Mannequin Collective launched last year at the opening of the Scottsdale Fashion Square (whose mannequins included one by famed Barneys New York window dresser Simon Doonan).
The 100 winning designs will be displayed for two weeks in August at Santa Monica Place. In addition, five will be selected by a jury of local artists and business leaders to be shown at Otis’ campuses in Westchester and in downtown Los Angeles.
The jury will also select a grand winner and will donate $10,000 in that person’s name to Otis’ scholarship fund.
The Collective will provide the mannequin, which the artists can customize with anything from paint, papier-mache and plaster to wire, beads or ceramic tiles. (For example, Doonan’s mannequin for the Scottsdale Fashion Square featured tulle and chicken wire.)
Santa Monica Place, owned by Macerich, has been undergoing a massive renovation that will reinvent the formerly enclosed space into an open-air lifestyle center. Plans call for a rooftop deck with ocean views and a mix of fine and casual dining. The mall, which is slated to open in August, will feature a host of upscale stores, including Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, Kitson, BCBGMaxAzria, Coach, True Religion, Michael Kors, Bernini, Ted Baker and Swarovski.
