A rack-full of Make/Shift creations
This past weekend, new clothing label Make/Shift set up shop at the Melrose Market: Young Designers Pop-Up Market, held at The Foundry restaurant.
The design duo behind Make/Shift, Jillian Bleiweiss and Suzanne Shpall, takes vintage clothing and materials and gives them new life by reworking them into original pieces with a chic and modern fit.
The duo scours the city for vintage pieces and fabric to recreate, such as a tank top made from colorful African-print fabric. As a sign of the times, the duo offers clothing for both men and women at affordable price points. Tops range from about $30 to $50, according to Shpall.
“Fashion is about individuality, and we want to provide original designs,” Shpall said. “You can take something small and make it awesome and beautiful.”
The Make/Shift pieces for sale at the Melrose Market included a floral-print dress toughened up by brass stud detailing. Other dresses on display were also updated with exposed zippers and pockets, and jean shorts were given the wash and dye treatment.
Make/Shift previously opened a one-weekend pop-up shop at the Echo Curio gallery space in Echo Park, and Bleiweiss and Shpall are exploring other avenues for retail, which include online e-tail as an option.
Other designers selling their wares at the Market included gold-dipped leaf pendants and jewelry by London Manori and custom-designed and vintage jewelry by BellaTar.
