Kill City has been making jeans and other fashions for L.A.’s rock ‘n’ roll set for a long time. But last week Kill City founder Drew Bernstein threw a party for Kill City’s new flagship at 7266 Melrose Ave. Yowza!

Sean Woolsey: T-shirts to Lighting

Back in 2005, we did a story about Sean Woolsey's t-shirt line Status Foe, here. He had a cool graphic eye and placed prints in a way that more interesting than just a center logo. He called V-necks before they were a commonplace commodity. He's now making awesome lighting and furniture out of reclaimed materials.

'Swing Left, Swing Right' Murs Brings Hip-Hop Style to LACMA


3MG's Murs, Eligh and Scarub and a whole lot of cell phones.

Hip-hop legends Murs, Eligh and Scarub kicked off LACMA’s Through the Mic series last night. Murs worked with the museum to create the new concert series, which explores contemporary Los Angeles hip hop and takes place the third Thursday of every month, in front of the museum’s famed Urban Light sculpture.

The sold-out show injected the museum with two hours of spirited fun and a lively sense of style.

Matthew Zink, the former design director for Victoria’s Secret Swim and Shoe division, struck out on his own to build the Charlie by Matthew Zink swim label. The 1970s-inspired line made a splash and it has been placed at retailers such as Barney’s, Intermix and Kitson. On May 15, Zink made his first West Coast appearance at the Kitson in West Hollywood, where he showed the 2012 Charlie by Matthew Zink Spring Collection.

SwimSpot's Santa Monica Splash

Swimwear designer Lisa Vogel at the new Santa Monica Place SwimSpot with Chris Lohman, SwimSpot's vice president.

SwimSpot runs women’s swimwear boutiques from Santa Barbara to Orange County. On May 15, the boutique chain made a splash when it opened a 1,600-square-foot boutique at the exclusive Santa Monica Place mall.

LuxeYard Got Something For the Guys

LuxeYard's men's site.

Los Angeles e-commerce retailer LuxeYard is on the move.

In April, it debuted LuxeStyle, its flash site for women’s fashions. On May 15, it debuted a men’s fashion section which will offer brands such as YSL and Givenchy. LuxeYard appoints “trendsetters” to post news on the site and write about favorite products. The first trendsetter for the men’s section will be New Zealand born, Malibu-based race car driver Matt Halliday. Vroom!

JLM Couture Gets Hitched on Robertson

Sure, JLM Couture is headquartered in New York City. But the design house and manufacturer of more than five bridal gown and bridesmaid dress labels traveled to Los Angeles to open its first flagship store.

Earlier this month, JLM Couture opened a 1,600-square-foot shop at 352 N. Robertson Blvd., a couple of blocks north of high profile boutiques for Kitson, Chanel and Ralph Lauren.

Where is the Best Department Store in the World?

The ballots have been counted and the vote is in for the best department store in the world.

You might have thought it was Harrods, which is a good guess. But the honors have been awarded to Selfridges, that 103-year-old English institution founded by American Harry Gordon Selfridge in 1909. At the time, it was recognized as the best example of a modern department store. Looks like things haven't change.
