InStyle's Hal Rubenstein Dishes on 100 Unforgettable Dresses at LACMA

InStyle Fashion Director Hal Rubenstein discusses Liz Hurley's 1994 Versace safety-pin dress with Los Angeles Times Fashion Critic Booth Moore.

The launch of Liz Hurley’s career wasn’t a film, it was her infamous safety-pin dress designed by Versace, which she wore to the premiere of then-boyfriend Hugh Grant’s “Four Weddings and A Funeral,” according to Hal Rubenstein, fashion director of InStyle magazine.

Heritage Auctions' Spring Luxury Auction, photos: Alex J. Berliner/AB Images

The “Constance” bag in metallic silver, a Chanel bike and a Fontana French art deco diamond platinum bracelet. These are just a few of the covetable items in Heritage Auctions' Spring Luxury Auction.

The World According to Gaultier

One of the first things that struck me about the Jean Paul Gaultier retrospective exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco is the chatter. On my recent visit, the chatter came not from the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd, but from the mannequins.

Have You Gone Completely 'Mad'?

This cocktail party is a little loud.

Can you stand another “Mad Men” fashion update? Of COURSE you can!

After last night’s season 5 kickoff, we now know the year is 1966 and at least one character was wearing a minidress—a saucy little number in chiffon with pleated angel sleeves.

I was fortunate enough to snag an invitation to a breakfast and private museum tour hosted by the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising for members of the international diplomatic corps.

Leave the Fur. Take the Cannoli.

Big hair! Big nails! Big furs! And shoulderpads out to heah.

For a Canuck pub, Worn Fashion Journal knows its American Mafia fashion.

The Toronto-based biannual publication dedicated to showcasing fashion diversity and accessible aesthetics put together an amazing video celebrating mob fashion in film.

It's enough to make this Jersey Girl homesick!

Try a theatrical customier, Marsha. I'm sure there are more, but this is one I've heard of in Toronto: The other option, more expensive and more time consuming, is to find a group of historical renactors who specialize in that period and see if they have someone who makes and sells costumes of that period.

Costume Drama Alert

Elizabeth McGovern looks lovely, but not so comfy.

Downton Abbey returns in a few weeks for its sophomore season. The Golden Globe-nominated British TV series follows the lives of a turn-of-the-20th-century British aristocratic family and the huge staff needed to manage the house (and the family members)—and while the story lines are inherently addictive, the costumes are period-accurate and fantastic.

One thing the costumes are not, however, is comfortable, apparently.
