The New York fashion industry is debating whether to continue to hold its fashion week prior to European fashion week; the Spring 2002 7th on Sixth Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is currently scheduled for Sept. 6–14; the New York calendar was moved two years ago to the beginning of the season...Calvin Klein, Tom Ford and Helmut Lang were nominated for the womenswear designer of the year award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA); Klein is also slated to receive the CFDA’s lifetime achievement award at the New York-based organization’s American Fashion Awards event in June...Garment industry jobs in New York City’s fashion district fell by 22 percent in 2000 to approximately 28,776 from 37,118 in 1999, according to a report released by the Fashion Center Business Improvement District; fashion employment in all of Manhattan decreased by 6 percent to 113,838 during the same period...New York-based designer Marc Jacobs announced plans to open three stores in Manhattan this year; each of the West Village stores will carry a different category from Jacobs’ line—men’s, women’s and accessories...Perry Ellis International has cancelled its licensed women’s sportswear line after one season; the line, produced by the Kellwood Company division of the Goodman Group, launched last fall.
