Modular Line Bows at Art Center

A new line of modular apparel will be on display April 6 at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif. “Change Clothes: Fashion Personified” is a collaboration between fashion designer Abby Moriarty and graphic designer Jeff Silva.

Eclectic and innovative, the collection offers basic items that can be worn several ways. The consumer gets to pick and choose different styles by adding accessories and details, including pockets, sleeves and collars, to basic fashion designs. Each detail is removable—some pieces have snaps, while others are attached with Velcro.

“It’s modular clothing with minimalist looks that can be worn differently each time,” said Moriarty, a recent graduate of the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.

Assistant fashion designers Erin Wignall and Matthew Bloomingdale helped put the 32-piece collection together. The designers have developed a number of ideas for creating multiple outfits—about 20 so far. One unique concept is the designers’ use of clear pockets (think pocket protector worn on the outside) that hold graphics inserts and can be attached to T-shirts.

The gallery-style Art Center event is more of a fashion expo than a fashion show, Moriarty said.

The designers plan to present a video display, graphics and sketches that show people the thought process behind each design.

The event will be held at 8 p.m in the Sinclair Pavilion on the Art Center campus and is free. For more information, call (213) 948-5964. —Claudia Figueroa
