Nearly Half the Tariffs Collected are Clothing, Shoes

Nearly half the tariffs collected on imports to the United States are on clothing and shoes, according to a recent study by the Progressive Policy Institute. Apparel and shoes account for only about 6.5 percent of imports to the United States but bring in nearly $10 billion in annual tariff revenue, the organization found. The National Retail Federation and large discounters including Wal-Mart and Target are already lobbying for reduction or elimination of these tariffs, arguing that these duties are passed on to the consumer, while the American Textile Manufacturers Institute supports the tariffs, arguing that the U.S. manufacturing sector has suffered in competition with less expensive imports.
