L.A. Fashion Week Fall 2002: Rami Kashou

This may only be Rami Kashou’s second season, but it certainly seems as though the designer is making some noise.

The designer showed his Fall 2002 collection at the Historic Los Altos in Los Angeles on April 11, with a performance of the song “Summertime” from the George Gershwin opera “Porgy and Bess” opening the event. For his show, Kashou retitled the piece “Wintertime” (more suitable to the season) but explained that the song itself and its lyrics convey the feeling of his collection. The symphonious performance, sung by Shawna Stone, could have even given Christina Aguilera, who sat in the front row, a run for her money.

Kashou’s collection, although small in size (17 looks in total), was big on impact and emphasized the designer’s sense of deconstruction. Artistically designed pieces—draped, knotted, looped and pleated tops and blouses paired with asymmetrical or godet skirts and godet or fringed trousers—were offered in a simple, solid color palette of black, burgundy and natural. A merlot knotted fringe dress worn with a braided waist belt was among several of the looks that won applause.

Overall, the collection proved that sometimes it really is quality and not quantity that truly matters. —Joselle Yokogawa
