Material World Plans 2005 Preparation Conference, Signs On El Salvador Trade Agency

Textile trade show Material World Miami Beach is planning to host a pre-show conference to help prepare apparel and textile companies for the elimination of quotas on textiles and apparel imported to the United States from China.

The Oct. 6 conference, titled “How to Position Your Company Now for 2005,” will cover such topics as how merchandising timetables will be affected by the elimination of quotas, what will happen to domestic production, what product will continue to be produced in the United States, how to finance a company with longer lead times, the legal issues of producing offshore, where and how to staff a company with offshore business, and how joint ventures and overseas ownership may be more prevalent after 2005.

Speakers include consultant Robin Lewis; consultant and economist Carl H. Priestland; attorney Thomas G. Travis with Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg; and consultant Mary T. O’Rourke with the Jassin-O’Rourke Group.

This marks Material World’s third run. The Atlanta-based trade show has chosen Miami Beach as the site for its textile and apparel sourcing show to position itself as the gateway to Latin America.

PROESA, the investment promotion agency of El Salvador, is the latest international trade organization to sign on to the show. There will be a PROESA pavilion at the show featuring contractors and suppliers from El Salvador.

The show recently partnered with the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), which also recently announced plans to hold a technology show concurrent with Material World in 2004. (Trade shows Bobbin and the Sewn Products Expo have also announced plans to host shows at the same time.)

The pre–Material World conference will be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, Fla., from noon to 4 p.m. For more information about the conference or the trade show, call (678) 285-0307.
