Intermoda Prepares for Fall/Winter Show

The Intermoda Fall/Winter 2003 trade show is set to bow July 16–19 at the Expo Guadalajara center in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The biannual show, organized by Exhibiciones Internacionales de Moda, covers more than 35,000 square meters of exhibition space and features more than 500 exhibitors representing more than 700 labels. The exhibitors are primarily from Latin America, although a handful of U.S. labels also show, including Ocean Pacific, YMLA, XOXO and L.E.I.

The show is a combined wholesale-buying and production-sourcing exhibition that includes women’s and men’s apparel, childrenswear, accessories and suppliers. The show also features the Gold Key Service, which pairs U.S companies with agents, distributors, representatives and potential franchise partners in the area.

Los Angeles-based young men’s label YMLA has been exhibiting at the show for the past three years, according to sales representative Irma Rojo.

Rojo said the show is similar to MAGIC International in Las Vegas, but on a much smaller scale.

“All the big chains in Mexico attend, plus the small boutiques,” she said, noting that about 25 percent of these retailers also attend MAGIC.

Most of the retailers that attend are from Latin American countries, said Rojo, who added that Intermoda is an important part of the trade show mix for YMLA primarily because of the opportunity to break into the Latin American market.

Op has been exhibiting at Intermoda for about 15 years, according to Kathy Hoffman, vice president of international for the Irvine, Calif.-based company.

“It’s the only show in Mexico, and the show caters to the department stores and specialty stores,” she said. “I’ve heard that Intermoda flies in buyers from the department stores.”

Hoffman said Op does not dictate which shows the company’s international licensees attend, but the strong buyer turnout has made Intermoda an important show for Op licensee Neo Pacifico.
