L.A. Fashion Week Spring '03: Jessica Moss

The mood was downright euphoric inside a large downtown loft converted into an art space called Welcome to the Plastic Factory, where vintage revivalist Jessica Moss presented a small collection of reworked vintage pieces on Nov. 1. Moss herself chose vintage ’80s fabric to create a pink-and-gray-striped quarter-sleeve top with stand-up collar and matching skirt. The designer’s ash brown wool pencil skirt with cream side pleating and chiffon bow worn with white baby-rib tanktop with Jessica Moss logo presented a casual yet sophisticated look. And the “Age of Innocence”– inspired red ruffled and pleated organza petticoat ensemble with red satin bustle, also paired with a white baby-rib tank top, was a crowd favorite. Moss’s one-of-a-kind designs were presented on models (blowing bubblegum bubbles) atop pedestals as part of an art exhibition that included Pop Art–inspired paintings by Whitey Flagg and lighted panels with inkblot sex scenes by Paco Sexy. Several solo musicians sang and played acoustic guitar throughout the evening, including a late-night performance by Louise Post of Varuca Salt. Welcome to the Plastic Factory was created by Rick Royale and Flagg to showcase independent artists, musicians and designers in monthly events. —Claudia Figueroa
