L.A. Fashion Week Spring '03: Nikolaki

Nick Verreos and David Paul know how to make a woman look sexy. And for Spring 2003, they did it with the elegant and exotic world traveler in mind. Their intimate show on Nov. 2 at The Women’s Building in downtown Los Angeles was titled “Vacances agrave; Maroc” (Holiday in Morocco).

Silky draped dresses and asymmetrical silhouettes are what the design duo do best, and this season they did it on a deserty palette of stone, golden caramel and cregrave;me; a zigzag stripe in chocolate, cregrave;me and coral; and a lavender and pink brocade. The cotton voile brocade came in many versions, including a backless tunic worn over stone pencil pants, a strapless blouson dress with an asymmetrical hem and a plunging V-neck halter body suit. A stone-colored stretch sateen jacket with a leather necktie paired with matching blouson shorts and a jersey split-sleeve gathered top with a leather T-neck worn with caramel-colored silk charmeuse cargo pants screamed desert safari chic.

And their dresses—a beige jersey cowl-neck dress with a leather asymmetrical strap and any of their silk charmeuse eveningwear—were enough to make me look very forward to Nikolaki’s next season. —Joselle Yokogawa
