Positivity Design & Marketing

As the mother of two, Lori Brookes desired something that could counteract the overwhelming negativity she saw bombarding her kids. Taking matters into her own hands, she created San Diego–based Positivity Design & Marketing last May, launching a clothing brand called POS and an initial collection called TAG.

“Our youth are exposed to a daily diet of negative news, ranging from school shootings to child abductions, so the time is overdue to provide an alternative message,” said Brookes. “With the TAG Collection, we’re taking graffiti off of the streets and putting in onto T-shirts, but with a positive twist.”

The front of each shirt in the TAG Collection features a graffiti interpretation of words such as unity, community, integrity, diversity and responsibility. The back of the shirt shows a dictionary definition of the featured word.

In addition to the TAG Collection, Positivity is producing six other T-shirt collections with the same positive spirit, marketed under the POS brand.

“One of our biggest challenges is to find a cool way to convey positive messages to our youth,” Brookes said. “We’re utilizing artistic styles that appeal to young people, and have found a medium—T-shirts—that represents a big part of their wardrobe. We want our shirts to be a ’trigger device’ that reinforces a positive idea.”

At last August’s MAGIC International, POS introduced the Girls R OK Collection for young women and girls. Following the pattern of TAG, Girls R OK features colorful illustrations of words on the front and definitions on the back.

“With all the different POS collections, our goal is to create positive messages in a context everyone can relate to,” said Brookes. TAG has been placed at Macy’s and Bon Marche in Seattle as well as boutiques in San Diego. Girls R OK and the other collections will follow the same retail plan.
