Designer Henry Duarte at Otis

Designer Henry Duarte (right) is constantly searching for new venues to expose his work. On Sept. 17, the Los Angeles-based designer tackled his most recent project when he worked with Otis School of Fashion seniors on their contemporary design project, which combines Summer of Love craftworks with Victorian details using leather and denim.

Duarte, whose own apparel collection shows similar influences but with an edginess, said, “The project involves digging deep to come up with your own ideas. Because fabric is so pricey, we’re using a lot of basic fabrics without prints and focusing on building our own techniques with the material with overlapping and other treatments.”

For the project, several students are combining glam-rock looks with Old London Town fashion. One student brought a Victorian fashion book and an original David Bowie “Ziggy Stardust” LP to class. —Claudia Figueroa
