Superba's Johnson Dies

Paul Johnson, vice president and production director of Los Angeles-based Superba Inc., died at his home of a heart attack on Sept. 22. He was 51.

Johnson spent the last 16 years at Superba, one of the largest tie factories in the world, originally joining as assistant production manager. During his tenure, the company went from producing 2.5 million ties to 12 million ties annually.

Under Johnson’s direction, Superba added a new handmade and hand-finished tie division, the Insignia Design Group.

According to Superba president Mervyn Mandelbaum, Johnson led his department with “efficiency, kindness, always a smile and only a wish to excel.” Mandelbaum also said that Johnson took great pride in ensuring that Superba stayed at the forefront of technology in all aspects of manufacturing its products.

“Paul will always be remembered as someone who gave his all,” said Mandelbaum. “’We can’t do that’ was not in his vocabulary. The loss of Paul is deeply felt, both personally and professionally by everyone at Superba.”

Johnson is survived by his wife, Barbie; two daughters, Erin and Christina; one grandchild, Caitlin; and his mother, Mary Flannelly.

Services were held at Glendale Forest Lawn Mortuary on Sept. 26. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena. —Darryl James
