Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall I 2003: Sara Palacios

Cuban-born designer Sara Palacios was a painter for more than two decades before she transferred her work to fabric to create one-of-a-kind clothing designs.

Palacios—who works with her husband, Rodrigo Palacios—is known for her unique, multicolored coats made from hand-painted silk. The designer cuts the silk into small pieces that she then sews together with bits of velvet, chiffon and crepe. The finished coats are appliqueacute;d, contoured and shirred collages that burst with color.

“It’s like crazy quilting,” Palacios explained.

For her Fall 2003 collection, showcased on April 6 at the Conga Room, Palacios added dresses to her line, which had previously consisted of pants, jackets, coats and kimonos.

The new line-up was a swirl of color with wisps of blues and greens and purples. Hand-painted jackets were trimmed with feather cuffs. Long coats looked like a canvas of bright colors. —Deborah Belgum
