A West Coast Connection for Urban Apparel

It all started with a super-sized headband and soon mushroomed into a line of apparel.

KNNX Urban Apparel launched its collection six months ago with just one item: the “HeadLiner,” an acrylic headband twice the size of a regular headband. It was so successful that it inspired a full line of headgear, including hats and visors. The company then launched T-shirts to complement the headband colors.

And that was just the beginning. The company’s quick growth spurt has inspired it to add men’s jeans and jackets, which will be available for Spring 2004. KNNX (pronounced “Connects”) successfully debuted the items at the Los Angeles Black Business Expo and Trade Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center in September.

Marvin Williams, the company’s founder and chief executive, said buyers are finding the line “refreshing.”

“The premise behind the line is a multicultural urban fashion line coming out of the West Coast, where I believe we are starved from an urban apparel standpoint,” Williams said. “From our region, we were buying brands coming out of the East Coast. We wanted to add a little spice. We are trying to make sure that our fashion sense is in the mix and is an option for buyers.”

Wholesale prices are $6.50 for headbands, $8.50 for visors, $12 to $13 for hats, $15 to $25 for T-shirts, $30 to $60 for jeans and $50 to $60 for jackets.
