L.A. Fashion Week Spring '04: W.I.E.

“Runway” took on a new meaning at Smashbox Studios in Culver City on Oct. 28, as Ghia Fam showcased mini-dresses that recalled the uniforms flight attendants wore back when they were called “stewardesses.”

The dresses were among the loftiest points in Fam’s W.I.E. collection, which featured both highaltitude hemlines and long, wind-swept silhouettes.

Fam’s flowing cape and “torera” skirts in shades of lavender and mauve were sheer poetry in motion.

Buttons, straps and a palette borrowed from artist Patrick Nagel brought an ’80s influence that was pleasantly subtle instead of pastiche. Finally, Fam’s mini-dresses with side-thigh cutouts added anything-but-subtle sexiness for the woman whose audacity runs a mile high. —C.M.C.
