Burnrate

Designer Jessica Jones combined her design and artistic talents to launch her new women’s contemporary collection, Silva Martin, in a film she wrote and co-directed.

The short film, “Burnrate,” premiered on Nov. 1 at The Jade Pavilion in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. Jones said the idea behind the film was to show a day in the life of someone in Los Angeles.

“We wanted to create a fantasy environment but still be able to show that you can wear the clothes,” she said. “The story line was basically kitschy and funny, [about] a girl who has this crazy day, and the next day she does it all over again.”

The evening was a three-part collaboration of artists showcasing fashion, film and art. Jones presented her new line on models. She also displayed her designs in an art exhibit that included paintings from the film by art director George Stiehl and in still photos shot by Alex Linares, Melvin Rogers and Bob Brill, who was the director of photography and co-director of “Burnrate.”

An interactive art-installation “Pong” game, created by Michael French, featured text based on ideas from the film and gave the event a high-tech edge. For information on the project, go to www.projectburnrate.com. —N.J.S.
