L.A. Fashion Week Spring '04: H. Starlet

H. Starlet is the type of sexy sweats line that goes best with heels and hairspray. But the 2-year-old brand is equally at home on the beach—and that’s exactly what H. Starlet designer Heidi Cornell had in mind when she created the line.

“We’re in Harrods of London, and my European girls will throw them on with a pair of Christian Dior shoes and go out to dinner,” Cornell said. “Here, I’ve seen girls out in my sweats at night with heels, and in the day, they wear them with flip-flops.”

Cornell describes her line as “very girly, very feminine, very sexy casual sportswear,” and that’s what was on the runway on Oct. 29, when H. Starlet staged its first runway show at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.

French-terry and cotton gauze separates in beach-friendly colors such as green, pink, white and yellow were trimmed with ribbons and twill. Minis, shorts and pants were cut low to reveal coordinating panties. Jackets, T-shirts and tops were cut slim and sexy. Cornell also showed a few edgier pieces in black and tan, including a motocross jacket, hot pants and a bustier. For the finale, the designer showed her swim line, which included teeny bikini bottoms and coordinating “Hidees,” adhesive floral stickers that allow the uninhibited sunbather to get a more-comprehensive tan. —A.A.N.
