L.A. Fashion Week Spring '04: Corey Lynn Calter

Corey Lynn Calter had showcased her Fall 2003 line at Smashbox Studios in Culver City by going stark-raving Mod, with models referred to as “secret agents.” For Calter’s Spring 2004 show on Oct. 28 during Smashbox Fashion Week, the designer fast-forwarded to the ’80s with her “Rose-Colored Glasses” collection, which draws on her childhood memories of Coney Island.

Rugby sweaters, ruffled heather tunics, mesh tops and bare shoulders abounded on the runway as Cheap Trick blared from the speakers. The notice-me-now color palette screamed in hot pink, bright orange and nuclear-meltdown green.

Minis and short skirts still prevailed, but Calter also showed several ankle-length prairie skirts and tube dresses, often with empire waists.

Calter also showed several swimwear examples, including a ruched one-piece in bright pink and a dotted bikini.

Still, her penchant for retro was not entirely squelched, as evidenced by a silk dotted babydoll dress in chartreuse.

Every secret agent needs a vacation. Calter let her hair down for this one, trading in continental sophistication for carnival fun. Where will the roller-coaster ride stop next? —C.M.C.
