Creditors Petition for Surf & Turf's Bankruptcy

Three unsecured creditors of Surf & Turf of California Inc., owed more than $500,000, filed an involuntary bankruptcy petition against the apparel manufacturer on Sept. 17.

The Chapter 7 liquidation petition filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles was made by attorneys Mark Brutzkus and Steven Gubner of the Encino, Calif.–based firm Ezra, Brutzkus & Gubner.

The three unsecured creditors were HSBC Business Credit Inc. in Los Angeles, owed nearly $390,000; Rosenthal & Rosenthal Inc. in New York, owed nearly $109,000; and SunTrust Bank in Los Angeles, owed a little more than $13,000.

The three creditors are factors and financial entities that filed the petition on behalf of several businesses that Surf & Turf has owed money since the beginning of this year. Those companies include Meridian Textiles, Paul Gottlieb & Co. and Sting Ray Imports.

Surf & Turf of California, located in Bell Gardens, Calif., has been in the apparel business for decades. It is best known for its line of dresses, including its large-size label L.A. Gal. It also manufactures under the label En Focus and More En Focus.

The clothing maker’s president, Deborah Sandy, said she had not seen the bankruptcy petition filed with the courts and could not comment.

Surf & Turf can either settle the claim or convert the petition to Chapter 11 bankruptcy to financially reorganize the company.
