Blue Tattoo Pushes the Envelope on Denim

Denim just got warmer at Los Angeles women’s contemporary sportswear and denim apparel maker Blue Tattoo Jeans Inc., which is launching a denim collection made with wool fabrications during Los Angeles Market Week.

“We have come up with this unique denim fabric as a way to reintroduce our denim category,” said James Shaffer, co-owner of the Toolbox Showroom in The New Mart in downtown Los Angeles and cofounder of Blue Tattoo denim. “It’s cool enough to wear in the summer, yet warm for fall.”

Items include jeans, skirts and jackets made with wool denim, a lightweight, 10-ounce cotton-wool blend. The fabric has an indigo base color, but green, yellow and red wool yarn is woven into the denim. Other details include fraying and back-pocket stitching.

Boutique owner Fred Levine of M. Fredric, a specialty retail chain in Los Angeles, placed a test order for the collection for July 30 delivery.

“It’s got a soft texture—it feels like cashmere, yet it’s got a rigiddenim look,” Levine said. “To do something new with denim is difficult, and any time you see a denim line that’s got a totally unique concept in its texture and design, it’s something you have to go for.”

Retail price points range from $120 to $180. Blue Tattoo is carried by Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s and H. Lorenzo, among other specialty department stores and boutiques.
