L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Coco Kliks

Coco Kliks debuted her Fall/Winter 2004 collection on March 29 during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.

Models—wearing beautifully coifed hair with 1940s-style hats, shoes and fishnets—walked the runway in perfectly engineered, tailored pantsuits with embellished details; ’40s-style jumpsuits; cropped jackets and capri pants; sweater vest, shirt and skirt ensembles; curvy ’40s-style dresses; and sportswear looks in tweed and plaid.

Kliks, best known for her collection of embellished “couture T-shirts,” likes to design by themes each season. For the Fall collection, she said she was inspired by the influences and ideas of the 1940s, a fascination with South America, the emergence of psychology and psychoanalysis into the mainstream, and a feeling of nostalgia.

“I really like to work with themes and try to explore themes completely in each collection,” said the designer. “Of course, I always have my Coco touches, which is the hand sewing, the hand embellishment, the luxurious fabrics, the printed linings and all those things that I bring to any collection.” —N.J.S.
