L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: California Market Center

Urbanwear and retro looks with a dollop of Hollywood glamour were the highlights of the California Market Center’s “Direction Fall 2004” runway show, held on April 2 at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

The show featured many of the styles displayed in the CMC’s showrooms, giving buyers probably the widest vista of what will appear in stores this fall. The show’s styles encompassed everything from fashion-forward childrenswear to hip womenswear.

The runway event was divided into eight scenes, which began with “Delightfully Unexpected,” a showing of chic designer offerings that defy the rules. That was seen in a purple cardigan and olive knit tube top combined with an olive-and-purple embroidered skirt, as well as in an unusual leaf-knit capelet paired with a plaid skirt.

Tweed deserved a scene all its own. The fabric was shown in jackets, coats, capris, miniskirts and suits and mixed with lace in vests.

The “Urban Suburban” scene featured boxy menswear designed with ample supplies of dyed and treated denim.

The “Hollywood Glamour” section said it all with beaded dresses, silk skirts and sequined tops. —D.B.
