L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Hurley International

Judging by the high-pitched whooping and howling, Costa Mesa, Calif.–based Hurley International made a strong impression on the fashion fans and loyal customers who attended the line’s April 1 runway show at the Falcon nightclub in Hollywood. Designers Adriana Moreno and Stever Wrapp combined the edginess of active-lifestyle looks with plenty of sexiness and attitude for the debut of Hurley’s Summer/Fall 2004 collection.

Moreno, a Brooks College alumna who has worked in the fashion industry for more than 10 years, created laid-back preppy juniors looks by mixing argyle sweaters with cargo pants and plaid petal pushers with black novelty T-shirts. Her studded belts and chain accessories added a touch of edginess. A string bikini worn with mesh athletic pants; a “Flashdance”-style T-shirt worn with a red miniskirt, black ankle socks and white pumps; and an orange-and-sherbet hot pants–style bodysuit showed Hurley’s sexier side.

Wrapp, a former bassist for Orange County band Guttermouth, incorporated his punk-rock sensibilities into the men’s collection, which included pinstriped and plaid pants worn with polo shirts over T-shirts, trousers worn with Hurley shirts and neckties, and engineered denim styles.

The crowd was pleased and so was founder Bob Hurley, who was applauded at the end of the show. —C.F.
