Kendo Scores for Women's Sneakers

Nov. 11 was party night in Los Angeles. Aero & Co. on Third Street hosted a trunk show for contemporary label Franny; Lisa Angel in Studio City held a poker night; and Kendo, a Melrose Avenue boutique specializing in women’s sneakers, threw a shindig at the Nike Blu House in Venice.

At the Kendo event, more than 300 guys and girls browsed Nike sneakers, photographs and art depicting Chicano street life. The retailer also supplied manicures, makeovers and massages for its women customers. Kendo co-owner Vladimir Borges said the pampering was a statement about equal opportunity in streetwear.

“In sneaker culture, it’s all guys,” Borges said. “Girls go into our store, and it’s all about them.”

Kendo, co-owned by Arsen Salatinjants, will celebrate its one-year anniversary in December. —Andrew Asch
