Fashion Competition Seeks Designers

Organizers of the first annual Golden Needle Awards are looking for up-and-coming designers to participate in an awards program and fund-raiser for The Associates for Breast and Prostate Cancer Studies at the John Wayne Cancer Institute and the Thalians Mental Health Center at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The June 5 luncheon event, which will be held at The Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, will spotlight new and up-and-coming Los Angeles designers. The afternoon’s activities will feature a fashion show, the Golden Needle Awards presentation, a silent auction and a sale featuring designer lines.

Fred Travalena and Brenda Cooper will serve as the masters of ceremonies. Fashion arbiter Mr. Blackwell will be a special guest of honor, and Academy Award–nominated songwriter Carol Connors will make a special appearance.

Also at the event, designers Jerry Skeels and Randy McLaughlin of the Los Angeles label Jeran will showcase their “Jeran Hollywood Graffiti Gown—Fighting AIDS with Fashion.” The designers worked on the dress for more than 24 years to bring awareness to AIDS research efforts. The black velvet gown features hand-beaded signatures donated by more than 340 women, including Katharine Hepburn, Barbra Streisand, Elizabeth Taylor, Sharon Stone, Angela Bassett and Lucy Liu.

Designers interested in participating in the competition can download an application at www.thegoldenneedleawards.com.
