Los Angeles Fashion Week Spring '05: Shay Todd

Glitz and glamour pervaded the Shay Todd Spring 2005 collection, shown Oct. 28 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.

Gold hardware and shimmering metallic fabrics played a large role in the sophisticated swimsuits and ponchos Todd presented on the runway.

“Right now I have this fascination with gold,” said the young designer, who started her collection a little more than three years ago. “Anything with gold I grab.”

A glitzy gold metallic one-piece swimsuit with a cutout middle opened the show, conjuring images of “Goldfinger.” Gypsy coins dangled around the waist of a deep-red suit.

But gold did not color the entire collection. Todd also incorporated lots of rich reds, earthy browns and deep purples, all colors reminiscent of a walk through India. These lent an ethnic and exotic tone to the glamorous line.

Swimwear looks ranged from a sparkly pink cutout one-piece to a tortoise-ring bikini. Resortwear included plenty of terry outfits, from strapless dresses and tunics to tube-top sets and shorts. —Deborah Belgum
