Destination L.A.

Retail consulting company Directives West opened the Los Angeles Majors Market on Oct. 11 with a Spring 2005 fashion show titled “Destination L.A.” Produced by Fashion Director Patty Fox and held at the California Market Center fashion theater, the show highlighted key Los Angeles designers and the growing popularity of Californialifestyle dressing. Sandy Potter and Sandy Richman, principals of Directives West, said Los Angeles is attracting attention like never before, making the city a key retail destination.

The show opened with a “Designer Hip List” category featuring designs by Los Angeles designers Trina Turk, Daniel Bohbot for Hale Bob, Megan George and Laurie Deakers for Ash O’Rourke, Charlotte Tarantola, Marc Ware and Teresa Pineda DeRogatis for Hot Cotton, Galina Sobolev for Single, Cynthia Vincent for Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, Tadd Zarubica, and Yael Torbati for U by Yanuk. Each designer or design team also spoke in a video segment about aspects of Los Angeles— including the celebrities, the beautiful weather and the diverse cultures—that have inspired the California casual-chic look.

“I think that L.A. is the pulse of the casual market,” said Hot Cotton co-designer Ware.

The rest of the fashion show featured looks from national and international as well as L.A. designers. Contemporary trends included ladylike looks, new-age bohemian styles, preppy athletic looks and the latest denim treatments.

The show also highlighted key trends for juniors. Old-fashioned looks with a sweet twist were featured, along with sophisticated country-club styles, and crafty, romantic styles with an ethnic inspiration.

The show wrapped up with a “Red Carpet Finale” category, complete with animal friends who added a fun ending to the show. Entertainment was provided by aspiring hip-hop artist Karleigh.
