San Francisco Fashion Week '04: Hieros

Hieros menswear designer Roger Alan sent about 25 models down the runway, each engaged in some mundane task— from talking on a cell phone to checking the weather or their watch or the volume on their iPod. When a well-dressed man got up from his seat and joined the scene on the runway, the audience realized Alan was using the entire theater as his catwalk. Pared-down and subtle, the clean, architectural line also included a few unusual and understated details. For example, pants had one inset continental pocket and two welt pockets—one on the front and the other mid-thigh on the back of the leg. Shirts had a simple band of color accenting the collar and cuff. Strong looks included a quilted white jacket with a yellow zipper and orange lining, short-sleeved shirts with contrast top-stitching, striped shirts with Western-style yokes in contrast fabric, and fitted dark-denim shirts with front and back darts. —Alison N.
