L.A. Fashion Week Fall '05: Hurley International

Hurley International aimed for a tailored style at its Fall 2005 fashion show, held March 16 at West Hollywood’s Bliss nightclub. But the Costa Mesa, Calif.–based company remembered its Orange County roots, sandwiching the show between an opening act of dancers channeling Madonna circa 1984 and a performance by Har Mar Superstar.

Dan Levine, Hurley’s vice president of design and merchandising, said that after a trend-hunting trip to London, his team assimilated haberdashery styling into the O.C. music scene.

“London as a source of inspiration for us is really relevant because of the affinity for the music scene and urban environment over there,” he said. “It aligns really nicely with our brand position and what we stand for.”

Levine cleaned up men’s looks, displaying plaid pants covered with a purple windowpane or abraded argyle, business-striped styles and long-sleeved woven shirts, among other items.

For juniors, Hurley emphasized a feminine look, with full skirts, fitted blazers in red-and-black stripes, capris, puff jackets with knit trim and white leather motorcycle jackets. Harking back to the ’50s, details included covered buttons, an all-over apple pattern and dobby prints, said Chelsea Burggren, who heads juniors design. The colors progressed from amber and brown to melon and teal.Khanh T.L. Tran
