Svoboda's Plus-Size Road Show

Plus-size apparel designer Jessica Svoboda is taking her show on the road with a new series of “traveling boutiques,” starting with a Dec. 2–4 stop in New York.

The Santa Ana, Calif.–based designer of the Svoboda line is teaming with Sacramento, Calif.–based retailer Michelle Martinez of Dulce and other plus-size designers, highlighting lines such as Abby Z and Darren Trentacosta. Svoboda specializes in denim and contemporary knits, wovens and tees.

The designer launched the series with a successful trunk show in Orange County last week, said Svoboda spokeswoman Rebecca Holmes.

“The Orange County event went gangbusters,” Holmes said, “but generally these traveling boutiques will be held in a hotel suite and limited to five or six consumers at a time that can meet with the designers and discuss fit and style.”

The aim is to take plus-size fashion into markets beyond major shopping areas like New York or Los Angeles. Svoboda and company will be heading into the interior of the country over the next few months.

According to Svoboda, plus-size fashion is the fastest-growing segment of the apparel market.

In New York, Svoboda and Martinez will show at the Penthouse at 13 E. 17th St., between 5th Street and Broadway. For more information, visit www.duclestyle.com or www.svobodastyle.com. —Robert McAllister
