George Lucas and Latest in 3-D, CAD at Siggraph Show

Cyber fashions and George Lucas are headlining Siggraph 2005, also known as the 32nd International Conference on Computer Graphics & Interactive Techniques, set for July 31–Aug. 4 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The show features the latest in computer graphics and animation hardware and software, including CAD and 3-D applications.

“Star Wars” creator George Lucas will deliver the keynote address and participate in a question-and-answer session with attendees Aug. 1 at 1:15 p.m. Lucas is the chairman of San Rafael, Calif.–based Lucasfilm Ltd., which produces motion pictures and offers production services through its Industrial Light & Magic, LucasArts, Lucas Licensing and Skywalker Sound divisions.

More than 30,000 computer graphics and interactive technology professionals from six continents are expected to attend the conference.

Fashion events include an “Extreme Fashion” seminar, in which designers, artists and technologists will discuss how they are using computer graphics, science and technology to produce computer-enhanced garments, textiles and wearables. Margaret Orth of Seattle-based International Fashion Machines will moderate the discussion, set to take place Aug. 3 at 5:30 p.m. Panelists will include Elise Co of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.–based Mintymonkey; Katherine Moriwaki of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland; Thad E. Starner of the Georgia Institute of Technology; and Jenny Tillotson of London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.

Following the event, “CyberFashion 4,” a fashion show featuring wearable technology, will take place at 8 p.m. in Hall A. About 35 exhibitors from 10 countries will present a variety of wearable computers and displays, “smart” apparel, luminous clothing, future couture and CAD/CAM jewelry. Oakley, Fossil and Charmed Technologies will be among the presenters. Featured items will include Simona Brusa Pasque’s Plexiglass shoe, which also acts as a stun gun; CuteCircuit’s “Kinetic Dress”; Elise Co’s illuminated sneakers; and Psycho Girlfriend’s “Circuitry Dress.”

Technology-based performance and installation artist Isa Gordon, who will be dressed as a latex-clad cyborg, will moderate the show.

Also on tap is the “DIY Wearables Workshop” on Aug. 2 at 10 a.m., during which visitors will compete in developing a piece of cyber-fashion apparel. A jury that includes the workshop team and the “CyberFashion 4”producers will select the best project and allow the artist to present it during the fashion show.
