L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Chan Luu

In lieu of the traditional runway fashion show, Chan Luu wanted to afford attendees to her first showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios on Oct. 18 the chance to leisurely study her Spring 2006 collection. So Luu’s models walked the runway before lining up like statues, as art in a gallery.

The Los Angeles–based designer said the 15-look collection had no specific inspiration. Rather, it was informed by styles that struck the designer as feminine and romantic. The collection’s color scheme was in hues of beige and oatmeal with ethnic touches and yarn embroideries for subtle detailing.

Luu made more separates for this collection compared with previous collections. Luu’s housecoats, sundresses and Indian pants were constructed from materials including silk, mesh crinoline and cotton.

The jewelry and accessories adorning the models—which Luu said were inspired by African themes—were also designed by Luu. —Andrew Asch
