L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: San Paredes

An intimate group of press, artists and fashion professionals gathered on Oct. 19 at designer Paul Magalad’s 2-month-old showroom, gallery and retail space dubbed “Birth From Perth” in the Chinatown district of downtown Los Angeles for a viewing of the latest San Paredes collection.

The Australian-born Magalad is continuing his studies on one-of-akind deconstructed pieces with a fine-art slant but is experimenting with pattern making and producing multiples of one design.

Magalad’s design technique is what he calls “in the round,” meaning rather than viewing a pattern flat, he experiments with draping, twisting and sewing with minimal cut lines and seams. A scarlet red dress was made from a tube of fabric and gathered at specific points for a ruched effect.

Among the more elaborate deconstructed dresses were a few simple pieces reconstructed from vintage fabric, such as a pair of striped Capri pants, a floral-print skirt, and a dress made from a crocheted tablecloth. —Rhea Cortado
