Lemon Twist Pleads San Francisco's Fashion Case

Danette Scheib is out to disprove the notion that San Francisco is not a fashion hub and she hopes her boutique, Lemon Twist, which opened in November, can help state the case for Bay Area fashion design.

Scheib and her husband, Eric, started the 600-square-foot store on Octavia Street as the retail face of their 5-year-old wholesale label, Lemon Twist. They primarily considered the boutique as an additional revenue source for their label, which has been sold at specialty shops such as American Rag in Los Angeles.

Lemon Twist collections feature art-inspired T-shirts designed with Eric Scheib’s graphics and Danette’s eclectic styles, which range from light hoodies to tulle slips. Price points range from $200–$500 for coats to $120–$300 for dresses.

The idea to open a Lemon Twist shop gained momentum due to the success of the label’s trunk shows over the past few years. Women tried on Lemon Twist’s latest creations and were able to put their own angle on the Scheibs’ fashions by ordering the clothes in limited-edition fabrics.

The tradition of tailoring remains at the boutique. The Scheibs employ freelance cutters and sewers to adjust clothes at the store. Danette also hopes the example of this raw fashion demonstrates a growing design community in the Bay Area. “San Francisco is getting known,” she said. —Andrew Asch
