Fashion District Gets Beautification Grant

The Los Angeles Fashion District’s Business Improvement District received a $10,000 grant from the city of Los Angeles to make improvements for a small median at Eighth and San Pedro streets.

The funds will be used to improve a dilapidated island that borders the Fashion and Flower districts. An overgrown tree that formerly occupied the site lifted up concrete to make the pavement uneven on the meridian.

Among the concepts being discussed include some landscaping and a mosaic walkway, said Fashion District General Manager Lynn Myers.

“We’re actually thinking about getting the community involved and have individuals create the tile designs,” she said. “This is all being undertaken by the business owners. We’re just facilitating the efforts.”

The BID has until December to use the grant. Myers said the project’s cost will probably exceed the grant’s total and is conducting fund-raising to pay for the balance. —Robert McAllister
