Gen Art Styles Competition Seeks Entries

Nonprofit organization Gen Art is looking for entries for their 8th annual International Styles Competition set for May in New York.

Designers are sought in the women’s ready-to-wear, menswear, women’s avant garde, women’s eveningwear and accessories categories. The event will also present an up-and-coming designer with the Perrier “Bubbling Under” award.

The Styles competition is open to all emerging designers, including students. Last year, Gen Art received more than 850 entries from more than 25 countries. Last year’s winning designers were from the United States, Japan, England and Spain.

Thirty designers will compete for more than $35,000 in prize money at the Styles 2006 Runway Show and Competition event, set for May 16 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. A panel of industry notables will judge the entries and select the winners.

Among the designers previously recognized by Gen Art are Peter Som, Cloak, Duckie Brown, Obedient Sons, Liz Collins, Rodarte and “Project Runway”’s Jay McCarroll.

The Perrier award will be given to an emerging designer whose sketch-based collection best represents this year’s theme, “Natural.” Five finalists will be chosen and their work displayed in an installation format at the show. The winner will be announced that evening and presented with a check for $10,000.

Deadline for submissions is March 27.

Sponsors for this year’s event include Acura, Beck’s Premier Light, Ciroc Vodka, Ecru New York, IN:NYCSM card from American Express, New York magazine and Perrier.
