Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '06: Deborah Lindquist

Deborah Lindquist’s “Asia Underground” collection, seen March 20 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios, interpreted recycled vintage and environmentally friendly fabrics with an Asian and punk rock edge. “I’ve always done things so feminine. I just decided the girls needed to toughen up a little bit,” said the Parsons School of Design–trained Lindquist. The “street” influence popped up in Lindquist’s vintage cashmere sweaters creatively re-worked into miniskirts, shrugs, long gloves and scarves, which were paired with fishnet fabrics and skull and crossbones appliqueacute;s.

Lindquist continued to evolve her signature corsets and focus on the waist, this time using the middle corset shape as an obi sash. Her full corsets and bras were shown in vintage kimono fabric, accentuating the feminine. Plaid vintage wool corsets gave a punk twist.

Bomber jackets made from vintage kimonos and hemp-and-silk-blend fabric were a favorite of the designer. She cropped this sporty style into a shrug and elongated it into a dress. Throughout the collection, bold appliqueacute;s with studded embellishments of Chinese characters representing peace, love, success, prosperity, health, wealth and love added a sense of positive energy. —Rhea Cortado
