Los Angeles Fashion Week 2006: Sew Down

In its eighth incarnation, Sew Down lost none of its edge. The alternative fashion show and market, held March 24 at the Ren-Mar Studios in Hollywood, provided plenty of avant-garde fashion and catwalk antics.

A nightclub atmosphere greeted revelers and fashion-watchers in the converted sound stage. Vendors showcased goods—from sandals to dresses and vintage drop earrings—amidst blackjack tables and thumping dance music.

Organized by Los Angeles designer Atousa G., the event marked the end of Fashion Week with its traditional sass. Lingerie designer Vargas sent colorful and quirky designs down the runway. B-Rude by Boy George showed punk-inspired gear for girls and guys.

Beth accessorized her trailer-park-meets-hip-hop clothes with cans of beer and sneering models. JC-US Denim showed clean denim paired with screen-printed, candycolored polos and hoodies for men.

Contemporary apparel was also subjected to the alternative treatment. Atousa, herself, showed safari-inspired separates, shirred jersey blouses and pleated shorts. Szulika showed cropped herringbone pants with satin pockets and a little black dress for the hipster party girl. —Erin Barajas
