Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '06: Anthony Franco

Anthony Franco found inspiration in the grit of the 1970s for his Fall ’06 collection. But rather than focus on the decade’s much ballyhooed styles such as disco, it was 1970s films “Eyes of Laura Mars” and “Serpico” that inspired the looks displayed at the March 20 show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios.

Pieces like Franco’s black-lace, hand-knit dress evoked the Helmut Newton-style kinkiness of the “Eyes of Laura Mars” while the turtleneck sweaters, gray plaid pants and a leather iPod holster recalled the iconic 1970s detective portrayed by Al Pacino in “Serpico.”

Franco designed 51 looks for the show—20 looks for men and 31 for women. He designed the iPod holster for denim label Red Monkey.

Despite his experimentation with 1970s style, Franco said he strives for classic silhouettes in his collection. “It’s something that’s timeless.” —Andrew Asch
