Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '06: Kai Milla

Kai Milla hosted an intimate showcase of her Fall 2006 collection at her Beverly Hills showroom and studio on March 23-24 that was inspired by Spanish conquistadors of the 15th century. Milla’s husband, musician Stevie Wonder, popped in for a brief visit during the showcase.

Milla and head designer Rubin Singer used a few artsy cosmic prints and a winter color palette of mostly darker tones. The clothes were given depth through layers of texture and luxurious handiwork. A silver dress and matching military-style coat were embellished with original sterling silver embroidery. One pony skin skirt had a laser-cut design, which was overlaid with organza and hand-embroidery. Another piece featured hand-stacked bugle beads.

The theme of the conquistadors was interpreted through corsets that were inspired by the idea of armor—one in winter-white crocodile skin and another in black leather with a stingray-skin panel. Sleek and sexy dresses featured a paneling detail that formed V-shaped points to reference weaponry. The silhouette of the collection mixed voluminous sleeves on tailored shirts with skinny pants and a cinched waist. —Rhea Cortado
