Designed Locally, Seen Globally

“American Idol” contestant Katharine McPhee may have lost out to crooner Taylor Hicks at the May 24 finale of the popular reality TV show, but she did it looking like a star.

For her final performance, McPhee wore a stone-colored satin gown by Los Angeles label Dina Bar-El. This was not the first time the singer opted to wear designer Dina Bar-El’s designs on the show; during the course of the competition, McPhee wore six Bar-El designs. The designer worked closely with McPhee and several of the other “American Idol” contestants to help create their performance looks for the show.

The finale show drew a viewing audience of 35.4 million people, according to Nielsen Media Research, which said in the final half hour nearly 43 million people tuned in to see who won the competition. —Alison A. Nieder
