Mango Bows in U.S., Expects More Stores

Barcelona-based affordable-chic retailer Mango celebrated the opening of its first store in stylish South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Calif., with an Oct. 26 cocktail party. The 5,737- square-foot boutique is called MNG By Mango and is a franchisee of the Barcelona retailer.

South Coast Plaza is just the first of several American boutiques that the Spanish retailer plans. A company representative anticipates opening stores in Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami and Boston. A schedule for these store openings was not revealed.

The party for the opening was produced long after the store’s official opening on May 21. Since then, Mango opened stores in Seattle, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and Los Angeles’ Century City section. It also opened a boutique at the recently debuted Westfield San Francisco Centre.

There are currently more than 920 Mango stores spread around 81 countries in the world. The company employs 5,800 people, according to a company Web site. The first Mango store opened in 1984. According to a Mango corporate statement, chain stores owned by the Barcelona-based company are forecast to earn more than $1 billion in 2006. —Andrew Asch
