L.A. Fashion Week Spring '07: Single
Spring 2007 should be the season where Los Angeles–based Single let loose. Single was initially known for its fitted styles when it launched in 1997. But when the label produced a 56-look fashion show Oct. 16 at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif., the collection included tunic silhouettes and A-line dresses.
If the tunic shirts sound like something from 1960s San Francisco, Single founder and designer Galina Sobolev said that her Spring 2007 dresses gained inspiration from the mod looks of Biba, the London dress/lifestyle label of the 1960s and 1970s.
While Single’s A-line dresses brought to mind Mary Quant and Carnaby Street, Sobolev seemed to steer clear of Biba colors of plum, rust and raspberry. The silk prints on her tops and dresses are inspired by Asian floral designs. Silk prints were also used as details, specifically in the lining of some of Single’s chiffon dresses. The show ended with Sobolev’s daughter Sara getting into the family business. The 8-year-old child modeled a piece from the company’s children’s label, Single Girls, which is scheduled to debut in January. —Andrew Asch
