FCI Students Show Their Cool Sides

Students from Los Angeles–based Fashion Careers International (FCI) went from rock to classical for their “California Cool”–themed fashion show, held Aug. 22 at the Celebrity Centre in Hollywood.

The show highlighted six student designers’ Spring/Summer ’08 collections in addition to alumnus Arnu Homkhong’s new line, which was being eyed by several showroom owners in the audience. FCI offers an accelerated program with design, merchandising and styling taught on a quarterly basis.

As a result, students showed mini collections of three to four pieces each.

Bernise Valdez launched the show with a “Glam Rock” presentation of hooded dresses and midriff blouses in green satin. Shane Lawson’s “Beautiful Girls” collection featured silk chiffon dresses with intricate paisley prints. M. Johnai iDaniel created eco-friendly foil dresses based on artworks and finished in illuminating colorways. Karie Laks’ “Radical Narnia” set focused on brocade skirts and feminine tops while Shelley Burrows’ “Chapter 29: Years of Tears” theme featured sparkled halter dresses and poofy cocktail numbers. Saida Samat’s “Southern Comfort” presentation highlighted bustier silhouettes, and Homkhong’s 23-piece set capped the show with a range of vintage-esque throw-over dresses detailed with embroidery or satin trim. —Robert McAllister
