Dow Introduces Stretch Fiber for Denim

PARIS—Dow Fiber Solutions, a division of Midland, Mich.–based Dow Chemical Co., introduced a new denim-specific stretch fiber during the recent Expofil trade show, held in conjunction with Premiegrave;re Vision in Paris.

Next-generation XLA is a stretch fiber designed to resist the high heat and harsh chemicals of many denim-wash processes without altering the cotton-like hand of the finished garment. According to Dow, the fiber helps the finished product retain its shape and size even after several machine washings, dry cleanings or multiple wearings.

Next-generation XLA is an olefin fiber designed to retain its stretch properties even after destructive finishing processes, said Bettina Grabher, Dow Fiber’s communications manager for Europe.

“The fiber for denim has more power and retractive force,” she said. “It maintains a natural hand. It doesn’t have a synthetic touch.”

To get the message out, Dow partnered with New York–based designer Alice Roi, who included denim garments made with Next-generation XLA in her runway show at New York Fashion Week in February.

The company has also signed on as a sponsor of the upcoming Kingpins denim trade show in Los Angeles, set for March 7–8.

Dow also struck a partnership agreement with New York–based contemporary label Alice + Olivia for its XLA fiber, which can be used to make fabrics with a non-iron finish and a comfortable hand. Dow is planning similar partnerships in activewear and in lingerie in the coming months. —Alison A. Nieder
